Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure in which a physician examines the lower part of the colon, known as the sigmoid colon, and the rectum. It is used to find the cause of symptoms such as a sudden change in bowel movement, blood in the stool, or others discussed in this video.

You are awake during the procedure, but if you have concerns you may ask your physician about sedation. A tube is inserted through the rectum and sigmoid colon. The doctor uses a camera in the tube to look for growths, called polyps. He or she may take a tissue sample to be sent to the lab for further testing. Watch the video to learn more.
